We have a seventh and a tenth grader attending Hopkins Junior High and Mission San Jose High. We have always had private tutors for our kids. The private tutors were very adequate when the boys were at a younger age. Everything changed when my older son started high school. High school is a completely different experience, particularly science and math. After having gone through his freshmen year with a private tutor and realizing that we needed more than what the tutor was able to provide, we came upon Mamie through a friend. The friend’s son overwhelmingly recommended Mamie for her hard work, flexibility and most importantly, her knowledge of mathematics. His opinion was Mamie made math very easy to understand.

Our seventh grader is currently enrolled in accelerated math at Hopkins Junior High. Having failed his first exam, he has now slowly regained traction and is currently carrying a respectable B with Mamie’s help. Our tenth grader is currently enrolled in two math classes at Mission San Jose High, geometry and algebra 2. He is presently carrying A’s in both math classes.

As a parent, I know how important it is to provide the best for our children. We make sacrifices every day because of our children. We live about 30 minutes away from Mamie on a traffic-free day. With traffic, it can take anywhere between 45 minutes to 1 hour to arrive at Mamie’s place. Yet, we put up with the inconvenience because of how essential we feel Mamie is to their education.

Scheduling the boys with Mamie couldn’t be easier. Mamie has been more than accommodating to the boys’ activities. For example, if one of the boys was not able to attend a session, Mamie has been more than flexible in having him attend another session at a future date. I know our boys have missed more than one session due to illnesses, but because Mamie is current with their syllabus and test schedules, she actually made the boys attend another class or do a one-on-one session to make sure they understand the material before the test. This is really going above and beyond her responsibilities as a tutor.

We really wished we had met Mamie earlier. Many things would have been different for us, and we would not have been so stressed knowing we have someone we can trust in helping our children. If anyone is in search of a math tutor, you owe it to yourself to give Mamie a try.

We have known Mamie for quite a few years now, with our older daughter, Arshia, now a Senior at James Logan High School and now with our younger daughter an 8th grader in Middle School. We started our journey with Mamie when our Arshia was struggling with precalculus in HS. Sitting through the first class with her, it was evident that Arshia will be able to not only get better at the understanding of the concepts but also improve her test-taking timings, which is critical when you start preparing for standardized tests for colleges. Mamie’s in-depth knowledge of the curriculum and also an understanding of the school’s teachers have helped both my daughters immensely. Their grades improved and with my now Senior daughter, she was able to take college-level math courses – AP Calculus BC as a sophomore at Logan. Mamie is deeply vested in not just making sure that the students are doing better academically but also making sure they are well prepared for college. She has often gone out of her way to provide a generous recommendation letter for my daughters for their summer courses and college applications. My older daughter was also offered an internship opportunity at Lee Academics. With Mamie’s guidance, Arshia got into a prestigious leadership program at UC Berkeley focusing on BioEngineering which is something she wishes to pursue in college. Mamie is not only a great instructor for my girls, but also a mentor, since we have often times, relied on her experience and feedback while going through the college application process which can be very intimidating for parents and students.

Needless to say, I would highly recommend her for Math coaching and SAT/ ACT prep courses and an overall mentor.

“The first time we came to see you, you had told us that your job was not to make help your students get into a Ph. D. Program in mathematics, but rather to help them jump the math hurdle in high school. We never wanted or expected Vaibhav to take up an Engineering or Science major, so what he needed was exactly what you taught him. Vaibhav never liked math, but he did enjoy his sessions with you, and you taught him diligence and perseverance, which have benefited him tremendously. I want to thank you for getting him through math, which he did well enough to succeed in securing the college and major he wanted. I wish you continued success with more students like Vaibhav who, I believe, would greatly benefit from your help and one-on-one attention, in a subject that they don’t have much of an aptitude for.”

“In the spring of 2012, a neighborhood friend referred me to Mamie when I was seeking a math tutor for my son, Ryan, then a high school sophomore. Although Ryan had been a strong honors math student throughout his secondary schooling, he began to struggle in his sophomore year. Ryan sought help from his teacher, but felt demoralized when the teacher suggested he should drop Honors Math. He spent an increasing number of hours studying, but his grades and confidence continued to decline. After a few teacher conferences and a semester of struggling, it became clear that Ryan needed assistance beyond his classroom teacher. I’ll always remember the huge beaming smile Ryan had on his face after his first two-hour lesson with Mamie. He was ecstatic and said, ‘I learned more in two hours than I did all semester!’ Ryan’s grades improved immediately, and he went on to earn A’s in PreCalc Honors and AP Calc. He also scored 800 on his SAT Math section, 34 on ACT Math, and an 800 on the SAT Subject Math Test. As a parent, the thing I was most pleased with was the restored confidence Ryan had once again, not only in math and academics, but also in his overall demeanor. I’m uncertain how to describe what Mamie did that made such an impactful difference for our son. To me it was like magic! He went into her house that first day anxious, uncertain and really disliking math, and came out positive, self-assured, and once again enjoying math. Clearly Mamie is gifted at math, but what is equally if not more impressive is her gift of teaching. She leaves me feeling that she loves her students as much as she loves math. She absolutely has her students’ best interests at heart, and somehow is able to tap into the individual needs of each of her students. Her math strategies and methodologies combined with her unique and wonderful rapport with her students, results in a lot of happy, confident, successful students.

In addition to providing math tutoring to our son, Mamie and her talented team also provided critical SAT/ACT test preparation, beneficial study tips, and sound college application advice. Her support and mentorship to Ryan during his high school years were key contributors to his academic success not only in high school, but the critical thinking he developed also carried over long after tutoring ended. The skills and confidence he gained contributed to his subsequent success during his undergraduate years, and now in his graduate studies at Columbia University. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Mamie as a tutor. She excels in filling in the learning gaps that students may face in school. She is highly experienced and a committed educator to every student who comes through her door.”

“Mamie is incredibly gifted in math. She is not like most other tutors who barely know enough material to get by. She knows every concept inside and out and is able to connect each concept to a previous concept that we have learned. Mamie has also developed tips and tricks for almost all math topics that help so much when a student is in a timed test position. Armed with those tips and tricks, I have been able to finish my tests with enough time to review my work…Mamie is not just a great tutor, but she is a fantastic person. She is funny and always excited about math. When I didn’t understand a concept, she would never get frustrated or angry, but rather she would quickly switch to a different approach to explaining the concept to help me. In addition to being able to teach in several ways, she would find more problems to use as practice to make sure that I fully understood each difficult concept. It is with Mamie’s help that I was able to receive the department math award every year in high school and it was with her tips and tricks that I was able to get an 800 on the math SAT subject tests, both level one and two.”

Mehr first came for a consultation when she was in the 6th grade. She later was the top algebra 2, geometry, precalculus and calculus student at her high school. She won the top student award every year.

“Since a young age, math had always been my strongest subject. I had excellent grades in math classes and performed well in such sections on standardized tests. In my sophomore year of high school, I began to struggle greatly in my honors algebra class. Even after spending hours each day trying to re-teach myself the topics from class earlier that day, I could not seem to elevate my grade and was headed towards a C. I remember the day my math teacher recommended I drop his honors class and not take any future honors courses because he felt my quantitative skills would not be strong enough to handle the rigor. Midway through my sophomore year, I learned about Mamie through a neighbor and schoolmate. Initially, I didn’t want to attend tutoring because I had always felt confident with math topics. After attending my first session with Mamie, I couldn’t help but leave with a smile on my face. I learned more from her in our first hours together than from an entire semester’s worth of instruction from my math teacher. Mamie’s caliber of instruction surpassed everything I had experienced in the classroom. Her incredible passion for the subject shined through in her teaching of concepts and how to apply fundamentals across all types of problems. Each session made me feel like I grasped not just how to apply the concept, but the concept itself inside and out. She often approached subjects differently than as described in textbooks, but her methods were always more comprehensible and thorough. I remember coming to tutoring one day frustrated about not understanding exponents, something our teacher had spent all class period ‘teaching’ that day. Within 10 minutes, all my confusion had disappeared and I thoroughly understood the topic. Her in-depth breakdown of topics, example problems, test preparation materials and responsiveness to students were superb. Whether pre-algebra or advanced calculus, Mamie’s knack for all things math translated to my enhanced understanding in each of our tutoring sessions. She expertly answered my questions, whether simple or complex, and made sure I felt comfortable applying this knowledge in class and especially on exams.

After that first day of tutoring, I came into class the next day with an entirely different mindset. My confidence was restored and my math skills rebuilt. As I continued attending Mamie’s tutoring, not only did my understanding of certain topics improve, but also my grasp of the math discipline as a whole. I began to intuitively understand the subject rather than think about how to solve a problem first. Math subjects, even advanced ones, became simpler and more instinctual.

Mamie was also very flexible with lesson scheduling. As a two-sport varsity athlete in high school, I often had tight schedule constraints. Mamie organized and reorganized her schedule to accommodate students like myself, even when I had unexpected changes in my availability. Moreover, she built her schedule to ensure we were best prepared for upcoming tests. Given that her students came from multiple schools with varying test dates, she remained very flexible with lesson times and offered timely review sessions that matched up with all students’ schedules. She even offered late night sessions when other scheduled times couldn’t work. For example, my teacher once informed the class of a surprise quiz on the current chapter’s materials. After calling Mamie about the impending test, she immediately offered to tutor me privately after my baseball practice that evening. Despite her full schedule, she readily extended her work hours so I was prepared for the next morning. Mamie always made her students’ needs a priority.

After two and a half years of tutoring, Mamie has left an indelible impact on my life. Her guidance restored my confidence in math and enabled me to achieve A’s in PreCalc Honors and AP Calc the following two years. This success also translated over to my standardized test taking, in which I scored 800 on my SAT math section and SAT Subject Math Test, as well as 34 on the ACT Math section. The knowledge she imparted has carried over to success in my undergraduate years at Occidental College (where I attained a double major in Economics and International Affairs as well as a minor in Spanish) and my current graduate studies at Columbia University. Above all, Mamie made me believe in myself and that a demoralizing math class didn’t define my abilities as a student. Mamie sets a high standard for herself when it comes to dedication to her students and passion for all things math. This inspired me to also set a high standard for myself. To this day, I am delighted to call her a mentor and dear friend who has been instrumental to my success in high school and beyond.”

“I took the AP Calculus AB Preparatory Course during the 2010-2011 school year, before attending San Jose State University for Mechanical Engineering. Mamie’s course is the best way to prepare yourself as a student looking to obtain a firm Math foundation for college-level coursework. She does an excellent job working with students to ensure that they understand the material, and also fosters an environment that encourages everyone to collaborate, which resulted in our entire tutoring group passing the AP Exam. It was this emphasis on working as a group that carried throughout my college curriculum, and into the professional setting in the HVAC industry, working with other engineers. Because I earned a passing score on the AP exam, I was able to enroll in Calculus II as a freshman in 2011. By Fall 2012, I completed all of the math prerequisites. The concepts she taught me in high school tremendously helped when I was taking the upper-division math, science and engineering classes in college. I graduated the Mechanical Engineering program at SJSU in May 2016 and owe a great deal of my success to her course taken six years prior.

Overall, this course was the best investment I made as a student looking to pursue a STEM-related degree and am very grateful to have worked with her!”

“I attended Mamie’s math tutoring in seventh grade, and she really helped me understand the basics of math then. I took a short break, and once I hit high school, I went back to her. I am currently a sophomore taking geometry at American High School and am also a part of many different extracurriculars. Therefore, I really appreciate Mamie’s flexible timings because it allows me to attend all of her classes. Mamie is to be commended for her professionalism concern for her students, and quality of instruction. She plans well and works diligently at being organized, and the results are evident. She has taught me many tips and tricks to raise my math grade, and because of her, I walk into school having a complete understanding of a concept. She has a plethora of practice tests on every level of math there is and is always making sure we use them to study and understand. She is patient, organized, and an extremely hard working person who always puts her students first, and I recommend her math tutoring without reservation.”

“I have been attending Mamie’s math tuition from 7th grade till this year. I am currently a 10th grade student in American High School and I have found that Mamie is very committed to helping all her students excel. She is one of the most hardworking people I know and ensures a complete understanding during her lessons. When Mamie teaches a lesson, she generally provides multiple tips and tricks, beneficial to memorization and comprehension of the topic at hand. Unlike most other tutors, Mamie is very flexible with her schedule, willing to extend and add new classes in the presence of an upcoming exam. She gives personalized attention to her students, and frequently motivates students to memorize or understand concepts in their own time. Mamie is an experienced professional at teaching advanced mathematics. Students who are attentive and willing to learn in Mamie’s classes are nearly guaranteed to be successful in math.”
