Calculus BC lessons during the school year are usually 1 hour once (or twice) a week from Monday to Thursday and 1.5 hours once or twice each weekend from Friday to Sunday. Some weekend lessons are longer if you are preparing for an exam for the following week. Primarily during the week, I will prepare you for the next lessons until I meet with you again. On the weekend, I prepare students for the upcoming week or for upcoming exams. Most students come to 2 or 3 lessons a week. When the math gets harder or as necessary, some students may come more often to lessons.

Many students find calculus difficult. A very good understanding of precalculus and some geometry is necessary to pass the AP calculus exam and to do well on many chapters in the calculus book. In the prep course, I will follow your calculus textbook and your homework assigned in your classroom. I will generally work ahead of your teacher so that you will understand the material before it is presented in the classroom. Problems will be added in from other resource material as needed to aid mastery.

Lee Academics Calculus BC prep course includes:

  • Up to 3 one hour or 1.5 hours instructional lessons a week (some weeks may be up to 4 lessons as needed)
  • many practice exams/materials from Lee Academics resources for your current calculus book and from former calculus books from your school. These are worked on before or after your instructional lesson.

Lee Academics Calculus BC prep course will cover:

  • Current calculus chapter/lessons at school during the week days and work ahead as time permits
  • Work ahead to cover future math lessons within the chapter during the weekends or working on the next chapter
after a chapter exam during the week.
  • Past calculus chapters during the weekends as necessary to understand the current chapter
  • Precalculus is necessary for success in the current calculus chapter/lesson. It will be difficult to do some calculus problems without precalculus mastery in some topics. Some precalculus concepts are critical for success in calculus. These topics are always on the AP calculus BC exam.

BC calculus precalculus topics include:

    • Polar and polar graphs – A deep understanding of polar is required for calculus.
    • Parametric equations/vectors
    • Sequences and series
    • Partial fraction decomposition

AB and BC calculus topics include:

    • Many precalculus graphs – memorizing many graphs is helpful
    • Trig identities necessary for simplify and in preparation for integration
    • The unit circle and inverse trig
    • Logs properties and graphs
    • Pert (continuous compounding)
    • Domain and some range
    • Rational functions- vertical and horizontal asymptotes, holes, especially graphing
    • Piecewise functions – necessary for continuity in calculus
    • Polynomial graphs, factoring, zeros
    • Radicals graphs and solving
    • Solving system of equations – linear and non-linear
    • Some calculus concepts span many chapters and mastery is critical for the AP calculus exam. These concepts will be
      emphasized at lessons.
    • Finals prep – Many calculus finals are multiple choice and require a different skill set than free response questions.
    • Strategies for doing calculus problems faster, allowing more time to do hard calculus problems on the test.
    • Released AP calculus questions will be covered during lessons
    • Many drills and practice exams will be assigned – I will go over your mistakes.

If you score a 4 or 5 on the AP calculus BC exam, then most colleges and universities will offer 8 or 10 credits of calculus – two college semesters. Sometimes a score of 3 will earn you credit for lower level courses such as Precalculus or a single semester of college calculus credits. With a score of 2, some colleges allow students to skip the diagnostic math placement exam to place a student into a college math class. Colleges differ in their AP policies, so always check out that information before applying.
