The AP calculus exam has its own unique language.  Consider learning math at school and then taking the SAT math exam.  The material does not look alike.  SAT math is based on the math from school text books.  However, most students need to take a class or study the style of the SAT exam.  This is also true for the AP calculus exam.  Learning the concepts from the textbook does not ensure passing the AP calculus exam.  The AP calculus exam questions are based on calculus concepts but is also a reasoning test.  Some questions types on the AP calculus exam are not taught in a calculus book.

LEE ACADEMICS AP CALCULUS PREP COURSE WILL FOLLOW THIS OUTLINE:

  • We will start with “easy” released multiple choice questions based on the current chapter that you are working on at school.  Students will work on released AP multiple choice questions from College Board on a concept at a time.  I have spent many hours reorganizing released AP multiple choice and free response questions by topic.
  • Moderate and hard released questions will be added in as mastery is achieved.
  • Students will work on released AP free response questions (FRQs) by topic. Lee Academics has compiled a 500-page book of College Board released FRQ questions by type from 1969 to present. This book is organized by chapters per a single type of question. You will practice one type of FRQ at a time until mastery is achieved. You will practice repeatedly until you can recognize the answer when you see the problem. Some calculus concepts are consistently on the AP free response portion. Emphasis will be placed on these FRQs types first. Lee Academics has put links to questions to the previous years’ question by type. This allows students to keep practicing very similar questions until mastery.
  • Released AP FRQS from a single problem type will be assigned for homework. I have added my solutions to 500+ college board free response problems. Students will be assigned FRQs by topic. Emails will be sent out directing students to the exact problems from Lee Academics College Board Book by Topic that apply to the concept studied at lessons.
  • Up to 10 proctored Zoom exams – 30+ full length College Board AP exams can be taken as “real exams”.   Lee Academics owns all released AP Calculus exams.  Only released exams will be used at lessons.

LEE ACADEMICS AP CALCULUS PREP COURSE MATERIALS INCLUDE:

  • 30+ College Board exams that students can take under “real conditions”.  These will be the real College Board booklets that you receive during the AP exams given at school.  Worked out solutions will be provided after completing the exam.
  • Lee Academics released AP multiple choice questions by topic – I have reorganized 10 released exams by topic.  Students will work with individual concepts as we prep for the AP exam.  I will start with the concepts that pertain to your current chapter at school.
  • Lee Academics book of College Board FRQs and explanations from 1969 to present – I have added solutions for clarity.  Students will be assigned a topic at a time from Lee Academics FRQ book.  New topics will be added in as students reach mastery. Some of these FRQs will be assigned as students learn the same topic at school.

An AP calculus score of 5 may be necessary for some students.  Many Lee Academics students receive 4 or 5.  Some teachers bump grades for passing the AP calculus exam.  Passing the AP calculus exam can save AB students $4000-$10,000 in college.  Passing the BC exam can save $8,000-$20,000.  Work hard to pass the AP calculus exam.  Most of you will never have to take another math class in your life if you pass the calculus AP exam.  Calculus in college is often very difficult.  Colleges using the quarter system, teach AB or BC calculus in 10 weeks, 15 weeks for other universities.  Sometimes, these classes are taught by graduate student instructors (GSIs) with class sizes often 100+ students – my son recently taught a class at The University of Michigan with 300 students.  GSIs are just students who have an undergraduate degree in math.  They may not be skilled at teaching and may not have taken calculus since high school or as a college freshman.

For students not planning on taking the AP calculus exam, many of the calculus teachers test with AP calculus exams.  Some teachers give a released exam before the AP exam as a practice exam; it usually counts as a test.  Then give one after the AP as a final as well.  Also, many teachers teach one more chapter after the AP exam and test on this chapter during finals week.  Additionally, some colleges will take a score of a 2 on the AP in lieu of a diagnostic exam.  Unless you pass the AP calculus exam, most colleges will have you take a diagnostic math exam before registering for classes.  This college diagnostic exam is based on algebra 1 concepts to precalculus math.

I have taught AP calculus for many years from many different prep books and text books.  Lee Academics owns the College Board AP calculus exams.  I know exactly what is on the AP exam and how to teach it.  Passing the AP exam in high school is very desirable.  I am very successful in preparing students for the AP calculus exam.  I know exactly what is on the exam and have taught AP calculus for many years.  I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.
